The segment of Central Avenue just north of the Central/Camelback light rail station has been enlivened in recent years with the addition of buffered bike lanes and an assortment of independent shops and restaurants. Nevertheless, the heavy traffic on Central Avenue makes the road unsafe for pedestrians and bicyclists to cross anywhere but at a signaled intersection. Unfortunately, it's a long half mile between the current signals at Camelback and Missouri. The addition of a HAWK at Colter, which lies halfway between the existing signals, would provide a safe crossing of a busy road. The need for such a crossing already exists but will intensify when Uptown Projects opens its two forthcoming restaurants, Federal Pizza and an unnamed Mexican eatery, on the west side of the street. When those businesses are open, we'll likely see customers crossing the street to have a drink at one establishment, dinner at another, and dessert at a third. Since almost all the restaurants in the vicinity are owned by Uptown Projects, perhaps that company could be approached about helping to fund the HAWK. Even if the restaurants were not involved, a HAWK would still be helpful in terms of linking the Windsor Square and Medlock Place neighborhoods and in linking the 3rd Avenue bike route to the new buffered bike lanes on Central. Right now, a lot of bicyclists are still riding the wrong way on the sidewalk on Central because it's too difficult to cross over to one's final destination on the other side of the street.
