Circle K wants to build a giant palace of convenience with 16 pumps on Roosevelt and 7th Street, just a few minutes’ walk from the light-rail line. This type of 24-hour, car-oriented business with bright lights and cars constantly pulling in and out just doesn’t belong in a Downtown area that’s trying to reinvent itself. It is directly across the street from a loft-style development where residents live above their stores, restaurants and workshops. It is also at an entrance to the Garfield historical neighborhood, which is also being rejuvenated. While gas stations may be needed for people coming in and out of Downtown, there should be a limit to their size and number, and should be designed to be more compatible with their surroundings. I think Circle K should stick to its present location on the northeast corner but refurbish it to be a little less stark. Having said all that, I think the tire shop on the proposed site is an eyesore and needs to be replaced with something urban, not a monument to hard-core convenience.
