Right now, it costs $1.75 to take the light rail any distance. But if you're taking it only to the next stop, you make a seat available for another paying rider, so wouldn't it be fair to pay less than if you take up a seat from one end of the line to the other? We shouldn't penalize people for living close to places they need to be and saving taxpayers money. This can be achieved with the existing proof-of-payment system the same way Caltrain does it.[1] Turnstiles are not necessary. Paying less for shorter distances would increase ridership for shorter trips, and paying more for longer distances would reduce taxpayer subsidies for longer trips.
