I would recommend an indigenous tree such as Chilopsis (Desert Willow or Desert Catalpa) for landscaping for maximum shade while maximizing water. Many varieties are available, which are deciduous, flower from spring to fall, and are attractive to hummingbirds. The only drawback may be its heavy production of seedpods which would require annual clean up. I feel it is important to NOT utilize a species which would require heavy water usage.
