Extend the reach of light rail using streetcars

Connect all of the major downtown landmarks, event venues, business areas, and residential neighborhoods together with a convenient, pedestrian-oriented streetcar line that would extend the reach of the existing and planned light rail lines.

The proposed route, using four modern streetcars similar to those planned for Tucson and Tempe, would provide service at ten-minute intervals in both directions. In contrast to the Light Rail, streetcar lines run with regular automobile traffic and do not require dedicated lanes or major changes to traffic signals. Stops are typically much more frequent; perhaps 1000 feet apart, as opposed to the 1/2-mile to one-mile spacing of the light rail stops.

A system such as this would provide multiple benefits to the downtown area:

* Encourage economic development adjacent to streetcar line

* Promote sustainable, pedestrian-oriented development patterns

* Efficient and clean

* Enhances the experience for residents and tourists
