So football season is in full swing, and my personal favorite variant of football is college. The pageantry, the bands, the tradition, it's all great. One really fun thing about College football is rotating "Rivalry trophies." Schools all across the country have games in which they battle for a unique trophy, i.e. the Territorial Cup Trophy goes to the winner of ASU vs UofA and "Floyd of Rosedale" (a statue of a pig) goes to the winner of Iowa vs Minnesota. I think it would be fun to incorporate something like this into PHX's HS sports scene. It would help promote neighborhood pride and in general be a lot of fun. ***Now this is NOT something I'm saying the City should fund, more of an idea that I'm hoping some people with kids in local High Schools and involved in sports could get the ball rolling on. I'm just putting the idea here to get it out into the world*** Within PHX's borders we already have the well known "Ahwatukee Bowl" between Desert Vista & Mountain Pointe. It would be cool if they battled for the "South Mountain Trophy" or something. Just think of the other "Bowls" we could have right in PHX city limits: Laveen Bowl: B. Fairfax vs C. Chavez and obviously the list goes on.... I think we in PHX need to really step up not only our City wide pride, but our specific Village and neighborhood pride. Supporting your nearby High School sports, especially the biggest sport, football, is a good way to do that. I think rivalry trophies and a little more attention paid to the battles between schools within the same section of the City would be a great thing for the City. |
