7th St. - Friendly to pedestrians and bikes

From McDowell to Indian School on 7th Street - a broader pedestrian area along 7th St. would be ideal especially with the influx of families coming to the area. I would love to take my children down 7th St. to America's Taco Shop, but the sidewalk boarders the road where cars are driving 35-50mph. An intermittent vegetation buffer would appeal to safety and friendliness of 7th Street in this area.

by Erin W9 This is the best idea I've read on here! With all the new stores and restaurants opening on 7th St. between McDowell and Indian School it definitely needs to become more pedestrian friendly. I love to walk my dogs but am terrified to take them on to 7th St. because of the sidewalk being so close to the street. A buffer between the sidewalk and the street would make for a much safer and more pedestrian friendly street that I'm sure the local business owners would appreciate as well.

by Natalie B1 I remember about 5 years ago signing a petition to do away with the reverse lanes on the 7s. What ever happened to that? The coffee shop owner where I signed at stated they has thousands of signatures.

by David B45 Bob, I think the idea might be worth revisiting after the next round of council elections. Let's see who replaces Tom Simplot and Michael Johnson. Since the 7s run through both their districts, the votes of their successors will be key.

by Bob D3 David B 45 - you are a keen observer of municipal governance - do you think it might be a better time to start this petition up and down the reach of the 7s, especially in light of Circle K giving up its liquor license application on its proposed 7th St expansion and the formation of groups like Pedal Craft and Downtown Bicycle Action Group?

by David B45 Those signatures culminated in a vote by the Phoenix City Council. Staff recommended against elimination of the 7s based on traffic studies, which looked at the issue from a narrow perspective and didn't take into account all of the quality of life impacts attributable to the current design of the 7s. Ultimately, there weren't enough votes to remove the reverse lanes, so the Council ended up supporting a set of small changes to signs and allowing left turns at a few locations.

by Bob D3 Anything that can be done to reclaim the 7s for the other life activities in addition to driving would increase urban quality of life tremendously.

by VonGoblin Given the increased interest in the neighborhoods that border the 7s maybe pressure from residents can be exerted to at least give quality of life a second look. I didn't live here when it was previously examined I moved here for the urban experience of being able to bike, walk and use public transit to get to where I want to go. The freeway aspect that DavidD32 refers to are spot on and not a great way to sell living, working and playing in the urban core.

by David D32 I have pretty much given up that the 7s are anything less than freeways with interesections. My least favorite routes anywhere. Especially on bike.
