The Musical Instrument Museum in the Desert Ridge section of far Northeast Phoenix is terrific. If you haven't visited it yet, you should do so. Its clearly a world class museum and Phoenix, and Arizona should be proud to have it. Unfortunately, its location is less than ideal for most Phoenicians and even more difficult to get to for out of town guests. The MIM would've been better off with a Central PHX location, along the Light Rail, somewhere in Midtown to help create synergy with the Heard & PHX Art Museums. But, what's done is done. What I propose is the City working with the MIM to help them find a branch location somewhere in Midtown, along the Light Rail line to open a smaller branch MIM location. The Heard Museum has a similar branch location, Heard North, in far North Scottsdale. Even a small MIM with perhaps a small performance space, and a few rotating exhibits would be a great addition to the Midtown Museum District. This could perhaps be on City owned land thats gifted/leased to the MIM or perhaps a private parcel. A courtesy shuttle could operate on a loop between the 2 locations. Those staying along the LRT line could use it to get out to the main MIM without having to rent a car. People staying in more suburban locations (like the JW Marriott Desert Ridge) could use it to see the Central city branch of the MIM, as well as use it for easy access into the City. A Central PHX MIM could also take place in 1st Fridays, opening its doors for free and perhaps offering concerts or an interactive room where people can play around with a variety of instruments.
