Reviewed Ideas
When CityScape was under community review and prior to the demolition of Patriots Square Park, there were a number of design iterations attempting to address the loss of "open space" (1 entire city block) and capture that within the development as a whole. Initially, the developer sprinkled small open areas throughout the project and attempted to add up the total sq footage to equal the open space of Patriots Square. That was rejected by the City as it 'insisted' that the space be contiguous. We ended up with the concrete pit plus some grass surrounded by retail we see today. I recall, as a feature during one on the late design proposals, that the roof(s) of the retail building(s) would have "green space" allowing tables, chairs, picnicking, etc. That did not happen as the roof of the SW retail structure is massive, white and ugly when viewed from the Luhrs or any tall, adjacent building. I propose reclaiming that rooftop by adding park-like amenities that would allow downtowners to relax, eat, drink and create an improved urban experience there. • Visitors and patrons would be able to have more open space than there is now. We have awesome urban designers in Phoenix that could do wonders with the blank canvas that CityScape is now. I believe this would improve the experience over what is CityScape today.
