Reviewed Ideas
Much of the City works on a one size fits all sign ordinance. It seems to be the fear that if exceptions are made, it will lead to city-wide exemptions, and our sign ordinances will go out the window. While it is important to keep control of the look of our city, it is also in our best interest to create reasonable ways to amend certain regulations to neighborhood appropriate signage. Case in point: The Melrose Curve. It is still challenging for our businesses to get signs that do not meet the general regs, such as neon and signs that break the facade of the building. Perhaps making a process to create an overlay for a neighborhood instead of each use having to go through a full process to have an exception. I believe this is an idea that is currently being worked on. Beyond Neon, we have had businesses that have had to remove signage -- such as Copper Star Coffee, which had graphics on the old gas pumps that were deemed unapproved signage, and had to be covered up. The ending result is detrimental to the neighborhood, not a positive rational based prosess to improve the neighborhood, as it was meant to be.
