The roads and streets are the largest amount of City of Phoenix-owned land. Consider how our roads would look and feel if our
arterial roads (mile roads) were designed for intra-city travel, focused on traveling 5 miles or less
Our collector streets (1/2 mile roads) were designed for local/neighborhood traffic focusing on non-motorized travel.
Our local streets were safe enough for biking without bike lanes/routes and walking without fear of being hit by a car.

Our local economy would be strong with a neighborhood focus of our street/road system that encouraged local movement by foot, bike, and low speed vehicles.

Envision our main roads as 2 through lanes in each direction with a left turn lane in the middle, with either a bike lane in each direction, a landscaped center median, or landscaped right of ways with trees between sidewalks and street pavement.

Principally, we the citizenry, need to have more influence on our largest land use. It is costs us millions of dollars to create, maintain, and update. We need to make sure that this investment is serving our communities and economy with the maximum return, socially, economically, and environmentally.

Streets of appropriate width (read narrow enough for cars to pass each safely at slow speed), with parking pull outs that have permeable pavement, landscaped right of ways with shaded sidewalks can encourage intra-neighborhood movement and exchange.
