Bike-sharing programs are popular in European cities and a program is even starting up in New York City soon, sponsored by Citi. These programs allow residents and visitors to rent public or privately-owned bicycles and return them at any of the pick-up/drop-off locations all over the city. Not only would these bike-sharing programs cut down on traffic, especially in cooler months, but they would encourage more people to get out and bike/walk in the city. Plus, coupled with the idea of adding more bicycle lanes, this bike-sharing program could really make waves for the safety of bicyclists in this growing city. Many people hesitate to own or use bicycles downtown because they require maintenance and can be stolen easily. The bike-sharing program eliminates those fears and offers a liability-free way for commuters to bike to work if they so choose. It would also be extremely beneficial for those desiring to enjoy sports games, dinner or nightlife in downtown Phoenix without having to deal with traffic, parking or leaving their bike tied to a telephone pole.
