Queen Creek, AZ is now the first city in the nation to recycle textiles with a curbside pickup program. The program generates revenue for the city ($.10 per pound of textiles collected), keeps reusable goods out of the landfill, and utilizes the fibers to create home insulation. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 13.1 million tons of textiles were thrown away in 2010. Perhaps Phoenix could look at creating a program like this, too? A link is included below with additional information on the Queen Creek program.
