Researchers have identified characteristics shared by "blue zones" (areas with the highest life expectancy, or with the highest proportions of people who reach age 100). Some of these characteristics can be translated into and encouraged by policy changes for Phoenix.

Examples:
People in blue zones live in environments that constantly nudge them into moving without thinking about it.
Policy translation: Rather than car-centric development, encourage pedestrian- and bike-focused development, which 'nudges' people into moving.

People in blue zones grow gardens.
Policy translation: Encourage community gardens

Community is important to people in blue zones, especially multi-generational community.
Policy translation: Encourage more community centers/events/programs that bring all ages together. Build more shared community areas, like public squares.

See the Blue Zones Communities link for more information on initiatives in other cities.
