Many Phoenicians don't realize that the entire city is already broken into villages (Ahwatukee happens to be one that is well known, but most of the others are not). I think many residents lack a sense of "neighborhood" because most can't even refer to where they live in a consistent manner. I live near "16th Street and Thomas", but it is also referred to "Downtown", "Midtown", "Central Phoenix", "Uptown" or just plain ole Phoenix. However in reality I'm in the village of "Encanto". By adding street signs to define our villages (like other cities), people would have a better awareness of our various districts & the village/neighborhood concept could be improved. Also adding "Welcome to Encanto" signs (like the existing one's in Ahwatukee) could help. Another way is to add the village names (instead of just street names) to the highway exits (off of the 17, 51 and 10). This would promote all residents to have improved knowledge of our various neighborhoods!
