Phoenix created its urban heat island. There is no reason we cannot un-create it! By employing a combination of incentives (non-financial and financial), code changes and municipal operations practices, we could reduce the average nighttime temperature in downtown Phoenix and increase economic activity related to tourism and entertainment. Phoenix would be more livable, safer (healthwise) and fun. ASU has reams of research on the Phoenix UHI and plenty of strategies are known to reduce heat gain. Let's put them to work.
