Dilapidated areas of Phoenix could be reinvigorated as an area in Phoenix that celebrates its old west heritage, like the main drag in Tombstone. tear down old buildings and rebuild with old west architectural motifs including dirt streets ( remove asphalt and sidewalks no cars only horses allowed). I enjoyed my trip to Tombstone and back on my native Long Island some towns require businesses to have an old colonial architecture. Look up ' colonial mcdonalds pics ' and you will see what i mean. This would create a tourist area, reinvigorate small businesses, reduce heat island foot print ( not a lot but some ) and depending on location could be connected to light rail via stagecoach.

by Ruben H I might start this "old town" Phoenix at South Mountain and mix the new(old town) with older areas that are representative of 1940's housing. Maybe even get a historical designation for that community. Save the best of the old at the same time work on the "old town".

by Ardyce E I like this idea, especially the stagecoach. I would simulate dirt roads by painting the street in a desert or clay color and painting the sidewalks to simulate board sidewalks.

I'd attempt this in an area that's moving up to prompt synergy.
