Take out a lane on 7th St and 7th Ave for bike lanes
Dearborn in Chcago at night!

I just read where Chicago replaced a lane on Dearborn Rd for 1.2 miles with 2-way bike lanes. We should do this - say between Van Buren and McDowell! To quote:

"Created at a cost of $450,000, the two-way protected bike lane that was created by removing a car lane features bike traffic signals, signs instructing pedestrians to "look both ways," and a 3-foot wide buffer between the bike lanes and the adjacent parking lane, reports Jon Hilkevitch in the Chicago Tribune. As Rotenberk explains, "[t]he major goals of the redesign include slowing down the approximately 13,100 vehicles a day that use the 1.15-mile Dearborn corridor and enhancing pedestrian safety, yet also improving traffic flow, said Commissioner Klein, who often bikes to work."

by Mike N5 I seconded, but where would the turn lane be?

by Bob D3 That's an excellent question! The 7s are now 6 lane roads. Protected bike lanes on either side would still leave 4 lanes; if they are unprotected that might yield 5 lanes. It seems to provide some width for turn lanes.

by VonGoblin why stop at Van Buren and McDowell? The 7s are insane; neither walkable or bikeable. I find 7th Street worse than 7th Ave but I live off 7th Street so it's a constant frustration. The traffic travels too fast and I'm not sure why we need a turning lane running down the entire street.

by Lisa P3 This would also create a buffer for the sidewalk, which would get more people out walking. I was really thinking about this last night as I was walking down Osborn, right next to the cars whizzing by.

by Bob D3 It's amazing how this description of Portland, OR taking two lanes out of a 5 lane street like out 7s shows support by property developers who expect it will raise property values. http://greenlaneproject.org/blog/view/how-the-promise-of-economic-growth-sold-portland-landlords-on-a-bikeway

by Lisa P3 This would do so much good for the neighborhoods on the 7's. Imagine having walkable, bikeable neighborhoods to hang out in and what that would do for business.

by David B45 Anything to tame the 7s. I would do this all the way between South Mountain and Sunnyslope.

by Bob D3 Now that is something the City can't afford to pass up - someone volunteering to work on a project that hasn't even been announced yet!

by Nicole R11 Yes! I've attempted a bike ride from Sunnyslope to South Mountain. I thought it was going to be my last ride ever. If the City accepted volunteers in any form for a project like this, I would be out there.
