Talking about trees here. We should certainly continue to favor native local tree species for landscaping, but we can augment this plan with an emphasis on edible fruits/nuts/seeds. By providing free goodies as literal "fruits of our labor", we encourage urban harvesters to gather food for the hungry and those who are interested in preserving/promoting our native crops for culinary use. This in turn creates a more positive interaction with the surrounding environment and an enhanced sense of local pride.
