Prioritize bike lanes for street sweeping and repairs

Phoenix already has some very good bike lanes and routes that can move residents around. To increase the numbers of bicyclists, the Street Transportation Department could prioritize street sweeping/maintenance along bike lanes/routes. Flat tires are a big disincentive to biking and the number of bicyclists will be limited if glass, thorns and trash are not.

by Jim M18 Thanks Bob D3 for bringing up the minuscule $50K budget for the City's bicycle planning program. The words "embarrassing" and "laughable" also come to mind.

by Bob D3 Phoenix has a $50,000 budget for everything to do with bicycles on streets - that is three cents per capita.
Imagine what could be done if the City Budget allocated $1 per capita? That would only be 3% of the Streets Dept budget - surely that could be found as an investment in the future without raising taxes?

by Patrick B4 Well, when you put it that way...... Yowzas! For $1 per capita per year, we could actually get some things done -- possibly even including HAWK signals and other crazy pie in the sky ideas.

by David D32 I agree; there must be significantly enhanced resources.
Having said that, the city already owns and operates (or contracts out) street sweepers. You don't see them very often but it is a big city to cover. A simple policy shift could keep the bike lane and route connections cleaner, without a material change in costs to operate the program. It might mean (and I am making this up) that a given neighborhood's streets go from every four months to every five months between sweeping. And that buys a greater demand for cycle infrastructure.

by Ardyce E Pebbles and other trash also land on the sidewalks. In my area bikers use sidewalks where there are no bike lanes and currently no room for them. Skaters have told me that sidewalks are dangerous for them because they can fall over this stuff.

by Patrick B4 Having once been a "skateboard enthusiast" (I think that's what the cool kids call it), I fully concur. Olive pits and gravel were my nemesis -- especially if, by chance, a cute girl looked in my direction.

by Peter N1 We could use MORE bike lanes, especially on those unbalanced thorough fares in the center city. This might free up the sidewalks for pedestrians.

by David D32 Agree completely. There are some nice corridors (i.e. 23rd Ave, AZ Canal) if you are fortunate to live and work along them. I find that North-South travel has more options than East-West.
