In conjunction with my proposal to bring back the automotive business along West Broadway in south Phoenix and Laveen (http://www.myplanphx.com/shaping-phoenix-s-future/car-culture), how about we do something truly productive with those Del Rio brown fields that yearn for redevelopment? I'd say let's bring back Manzanita Speedway or some other complementary race track and related services. This would serve to promote the following benefits to the area and to the city as a whole:

1) Recreation where it is lacking.
2) Culture and vitality to an area where it is often lacking.
3) Tax revenue -- we're losing that money to other cities.
4) Economic development potential.

Let's focus on that last one. This is really big bucks, and we should be striving to keep those dollars in the city of Phoenix. Not only should we seek to support an existing cluster of economic activity, but we should invite new innovative businesses to join in. This means potential high tech employment in the future, built upon a thriving business that already exists but doesn't necessarily call Phoenix home like it once did. So let's get it back -- Del Rio represents a unique opportunity to do so.
