We need a serious infrustructure built for bicycle riding/commuting in Central Phoenix. I'm NOT just talking about putting in more lanes and adding some bike racks. The truth is that people do not feel safe riding their bikes because of all the cars. Therefore, I am proposing that Phoenix develop a separate road system for bikes that would provide safe passage to cycling commuters. A simple road system could take advantage of our canal ways and residential streets. One side of a canal could be made into a two-way bike line. Certain residential streets, that are not essential for car traffic, could be retrofitted so that half of the street is used soley for bicylces and the other half could be used for one way car traffic. Many good systems for urban bicycle infrastructure come from the Netherlands. Therefore, I suggest sending a delegation from the city to speak with experts in this area to develop a new infrustructure in Phoenix. No more "feel good efforts"! Let's get serious and be intentional!
