Create a Vibrant Nightlife for Downtown PHX

I mentioned this idea as a comment to someone else's idea, but I think it is important enough to have it stand on its own. A frustration that I have with downtown PHX is that, despite the activity that has sprouted up in recent years during the day, at night the downtown core becomes a ghost town. We need and deserve a vibrant nightlife in downtown PHX. Why not encourage the creation of dance clubs and pubs, and venues for live music performances? Why not help to cultivate a local music scene for which PHX would be known? Why not encourage the opening of several comedy clubs in downtown PHX? In the 1970s and 1980s Chicago was known as a place for aspiring comics to get their start. Why can't PHX become that? And while I am not crazy about casinos, having one or two of these would at least give the city another venue for a variety of live shows. PHX has great potential, but too often it feels like a sleepytown. We are the fifth largest city in the country. We deserve better.
