I take Valley Metro everyday and come from a city where mass transit is extensive, and so PHX came as a shock. We are the fifth largest city in the country, but our mass transit does not reflect this. There have been times when I have waited an hour during rush hour for a bus to take me home from work, because the next bus broke down and by the time the following bus arrived it was a full hour later. Really? During rush hour, of all times? Mass transit is an amenity many seek out in a large city. I hear how we want to attract intellectual talent to this city to spearhead new businesses, etc., but many such people want a city with an adequate mass transit service. I often hear two contradictory claims: 1) better mass transit won't come until more people use it, thereby creating demand, and 2) people won't ride Valley Metro because it is inconvenient. Stop the chicken and egg dilemma by making Valley Metro buses more convenient and then market this welcome development aggressively.
