Design shade into new development for pedestrians and common areas. This should be applied to renovation request for existing buildings and new development. Sun studies can be implemented and based on these studies the new building or renovation of a building should maximizing shade in the common areas or pedestrian areas. Sometimes I feel like designers out of Chicago or the north east design a building and never look at the actual site or orientation regarding the sun.
