Downtown PHX has done some really great things to make it a vibrant 7 day a week place, but what it is seriously lacking is sufficient downtown retail. Before I bought my new home in Phoenix I needed temporary housing for about 10 months. I first looked downtown, but realized as I was touring apartments on a Sunday afternoon along the light rail line in Downtown the streets were nearly empty and there were very few people milling around. The reason - no retail to draw people from across the city. I ended up getting an apartment in Tempe. Now that I am moved into my new home in the City, I find it odd that I have to drive to SanTan, Scottsdale, or Tempe Marketplace when I need to buy a gift, get some new work clothes, or get something that I can't otherwise find at Target or the grocery.
