I would like to walk or bike to school with my kids, but it's just not safe for young children to walk along and cross 6-lane roads, or ride down roads with no buffered bike lanes. We should make the area around schools more pedestrian-friendly to encourage kids to walk or bike to school. Create paths to connect each public school with the neighborhoods it serves. Add pedestrian islands, add HAWK crossings, add bike lanes, reduce the number of auto lanes, add landscaping and shade, etc., to encourage families that live near the school to walk, rather than drive.
