We are pushing many buildings and redevelopments far back from the street and creating many setbacks. Although this is needed in many places, as we try to create a walking friendly city, the human scale is getting lost. Whole block projects tend to be monoliths that are removed from the street, and it leaves the project disconnected. We need to work to enlarge the overhangs, encourage streetside development such as patios, and create projected that add to the the energy and experience of walking around our city if we are to succeed.

by Patrick B4 In general, I would support eliminating front setbacks for the most part. Is there a reason other than aesthetic that we keep setbacks at 15+ feet, even on residential?

by Ardyce E I assume that residential setbacks are required for visibility when entering/leaving a driveway.

by Derek H1 If the ROW is owned by the public, then we should charge for it and earn a return on our investment.

by Sean S7 I don't know of any reasons for required setbacks other than the regulation of aesthetics. I'm all for removing minimum setbacks. I'd also like to see buildings include patios in their footprints rather than assuming they can or attempting to take ROW for it.
