This is based on a previous idea (now closed to comments) that I've been thinking about. In order to encourage people to use the light rail within their own neighborhood and reduce car dependency we need to have lower fares for shorter trips. Right now, it costs the same whether you are taking the light rail end to end or just riding one stop. This discourages light rail use for a lot of people. I know that I'm one of them since most of the trips I would take are near my Midtown home and would most likely include my husband. As if March 1st, hopping on the light rail to go a few stops for dinner, First Friday or to the museum will cost us $8. Right now it's just a lot easier and far less expensive to hop in the car.

Having a "short trip" fare option could allow you to ride a short distance (perhaps 4 stops in either direction) for a reduced fare. This ticket would list the name of the stops at either end of the "short trip" option and the rider is only allowed to travel between those stops. Each ticket machine would be programmed for the "short trip" option with the valid zone listed for the fare inspector to see. This would also easily allow for an all day, 7 day, 15 day or monthly pass for short trips. A ten trip pack or refillable card would also be a nice idea. This might also be a good tie in with a bike share program as people can hop on a bike to complete their trip.

This idea will lead to more light rail revenue and more walkable neighborhoods. More walkable neighborhoods lead to more fitness, more local spending and more happiness. Yep. Less is more.
