Our existing bike lanes are ignored by drivers who think of them as shoulders.

On the Osborn bike lane today between 20th Street and 36th Street I witnessed a driver occupying the bike lane for 17 blocks. I also saw people parked in the bike lane and a driver pass someone on the right in the bike lane to get to the right hand turn lane.

Many of these streets with bike lanes (such as Osborn and 15th Avenue) are extra wide and can easily accomodate a buffer between the traffic and the bike lane. These lanes should also be painted green to clearly distinguish between the bike lane and the travel lane and should be continuous instead of stopping and starting. This is going to be very important as we move toward a bike sharing system.
