Map MyPlanPHX ideas by zip code to increase participation
If you grew up in the Northeast or California, you tended to say "soda." In the Midwest, Great Plains, and Pacific Northwest, it was "pop." In the Deep South, have a "Coke." And Arizona? Most likely, "soda."

One of my favorite maps of all time is the "The Great Pop vs. Soda Controversy." Did you know there are regional differences to how Americans refer to carbonated soft drinks? Ask yourself the question, "When I was growing up, did I say 'pop,' 'soda,' 'Coke,' or something else?" Then look at the map with the thousands of red, green, blue, and pink dots.

The reason I bring this up is that I'm wondering how many people FROM THROUGHOUT THE CITY are participating in MyPlanPHX. Similar number-crunching and mapping capability would assist city officials to determine what areas are not as "vocal" as others and what actions could be taken before the October 30 deadline to encourage greater and more widespread participation.

To date, 425 ideas have been submitted, 400 minds are now mixing, and 1,400 comments have been made. The numbers are impressive, but if these numbers represent individuals by and large from a few parts of town, that says to me there is room for improvement. A real-time online map of the number of IDEAS BY ZIP CODE would help spur "get out the vote" efforts in underrepresented areas. No names, no street addresses, just ideas by zip code.

Voices from all parts of our city need to be heard.

Jim, another great idea. We are working on this as we speak.

by Anthony C4 This could lead to how the public transit infrastructure could be expanded depending upon which areas had the most interest and would benefit from a light rail extension or expanded bus services.

by Will Novak Obviously the most ideas are about Downtown and Central PHX, and I think thats natural/will be the case no matter what. But I do think this is a good suggestion. It may also spark people to think more about areas that haven't been mentioned much and ponder what might improve them (i.e. Maryvale, or the PV Village)

by Jim M18 Some eyebrows may be raised by Will N2's statement that "Obviously the most ideas are about Downtown and Central Phoenix, and I think that's natural/will be the case no matter what." There is some recent research that supports Will's assertion.

In 2011, the ASU School of Art, ASU School of Sustainability, and coLab Studio, LLC, "collected over 100 lengthy interviews in person from people all over the Metropolitan Phoenix area. The data shows a stark difference of the way people live depending on their location in the city, and does point to a correlation between lifestyle choices and surrounding environment. However the most interesting aspect we uncovered is the lack of connection some people have to the city as a place – environmentally, socially, and culturally – when they live in the gigantic 'middle' zones far from central areas and the exterior fringe."

What can we learn from these findings to increase citizen participation and involvement? For more information about the study, visit http://colabstudio.com/?p=898
