MetroCenter. Often called "GhettoCenter", this property is one of the largest challenges I see for the City of Phoenix... and one of the biggest opportunities. It really should be an amusement park... and before you call me crazy and start talking about the weather here, consider that our equally "ghetto" Arizona State Fair sees 1.2 million visitors in just 3 weeks - almost TWICE the average daily attendance at Disneyland. Consider that we have two outdoor zoological parks, the outdoor Desert Botanical Gardens, and plenty of outdoor shopping centers, power centers, and hiking trails that people visit in the dead of summer. Consider that these days, most amusement park rides are actually indoors. Consider that with an average daily attendance of 50,000 people spending $150 a day brings an additional $2.7 BILLION in spending to Phoenix each year. Consider that Orlando has even more terrible weather than we do, and a hurricane season, yet sustains 45 different amusement parks and major attractions. Consider that by having such an attraction, more conventions would be booked, and people would bring their families with them to conventions, and they'd extend their stays by 1-3 additional nights - this would instantly become your #1 sales tax revenue generator. Airlines, rental car companies, hotels, retail shops, restaurants/bars and other cultural attractions would rejoice. Please make sure that the next extension of the Metro rail has a station smack-dab in the middle of this mall... make it thrive...
