Forwarded to PlanPHX Leadership Committee and appropriate city department
I'm unaware of such a study within the Planning and Development Department. This is an idea that needs to be brought to the attention of the PlanPHX Leadership Committee. I'm forwarding it to them for their review.

Years ago, there was a study/proposal to build monorail over the canals. I haven't found a copy of it. Can anyone help?

The advantages were that it's cheaper to build and it could avoid many intersections. The disadvantage that i remember is that it adjoins

the back yards in residential neighborhoods.

I'd like the General Plan to allow, not require it.

by Will Novak "Monorail"? Did you mean Light Rail? Monorail is horribly expensive, no matter where you put it.

Running future legs of the LRT along the canals is OK here and there, but not for most uses. A big part of whats good about LRT is that it can help redevelop an area with the proper zoning. If you put it along canals, most of which are completely developed along their entire length you've turned LRT from a transportation & development tool into just a transportation tool.

One area the City/Valley Metro should look at for running LRT along a canal is for the NW extension as they try to get across the I-17. Running along the Canal there allows them to connect to Sunnyslope, Rose Mofford Park, MetroCenter & the MetroCenter Transit Center, Castles N Coaster, as well as being reasonably close to Cortez HS and Cortez Park.

by David B45 True monorails are generally useful only when running short loops in controlled environments such as theme parks and airports. Often people say "monorail" when they really mean an elevated train on two rails. Regardless, I'd rather enhance the canals as recreational corridors with better walking and bicycling paths.

by Ardyce E Will, before I decide whether to support monorail, I'd need to examine the old study, so where is it? Do you perhaps Know how to locate a copy?
