The world is finding short term fixes to our broiling asphalt seas - high tech paint.

From article 1: "Pavement accounts for 35-50% of the surfaces in city, according to the Berkeley Lab. Since city dwellers spend much more time on sidewalks than they do on roofs, paler pavement would be an improvement they could immediately appreciate."

Let's get painting, Phoenix!

by Ardyce E If we'd paint streets and parking lots in the various colors of the desert floors, we could emphasize that Phoenix. is built on a desert. What an aerial view! What an identity for our city!

by Patrick B4 We could charge different development fees for various forms of ground coverage, based on their heat island effect. Black asphalt should be the most expensive. Permeable parking should be the least.

by Ardyce E I'd combine this with installing grates at intersections to pull vehicle exhaust under the street and take it elsewhere. This would affect pollution and surface temps.

by Bob D3 Thank you Ardyce, no I haven't. It makes sense there though - I didn't know about it.

by Ardyce E Bob, maybe you haven't seen the grates under the drive-in windows at McDonald's. The exhaust is sucked under the driveway and taken elsewhere. Neither the drive-thru cashier nor the customer is asphixiated or roasted.

by Bob D3 Are you being ironic? I'm actually making a serious proposal but there could be delicious whimsy in executing the ideas :)

by Patrick B4 Not to mention, how cool would it be to have a reputation as "that funky city with the colorful streets"? Some will absolutely hate the notion. Don't listen to them.

by Bob D3 Excellent! We could have a street painting festival - at every place Streets Dept. needs to resurface the road!
