Laveen is the oft-forgotten child of Phoenix nestled at the base of South Mountain Park, the largest municipal park in the country. Even National Geographic Magazine called this park out when talking about Phoenix (not Camelback Mountain, which often gets all the kuddos and press) and has trail access into the park directly from Laveen. Laveen is a unique community with a history steep in agriculture (even the Welcome to Laveen signs have a cow on them as a nod to the heritage). Laveen has doubled in size in the last 10 years (according to Census data). Laveen is located only a 20 minute ride from downtown and the airport. In addition, the village is home to Cesar Chavez Park which is sustainable and is focused on water conservation by watering it's acres by recycling water from it's 22 acre lake. The park is also home to an award-winning eco-friendly built public library. As well as home to the municiple golf course Aguila which is rated quite highlly by Golf Digest Magazine and is a qualifying course for the Waste Management Open Golf Tournament. The village hosts a Community Parade complete with flyovers from crop dusters, the Shriner mini-cars, and horses. Unfortunately, the city offers very little resources for children in our community or does little to promote the village for economic development. I think the city should support communities by emphasizing the uniqueness of the communities and what they have to offer the rest of the City.
