We should redevelop old strip commercial along Indian School, Thomas, McDowell. Might be a good idea to stop trying to encourage the private sector to re-purpose these bad commercial buildings and simply acquire them and tear them down. Even more insidious are single-family residential properties that back-out on to major roadways. We should try to acquire these properties and create a greenbelt. The city did this quite successfully along Highland Avenue between 16th and 20th street. Consider the single-family homes along 24th street between Indian School and Camelback or the single-family homes along Bethany Home Road near Christown Mall. The city created this situation with road-widening and should take the next step to create green-belts that would buffer the remaining neighborhoods from major roadways and provide areas for bicycles and pedestrians and transit stops.
