Mission Revival style shaded walkway

Some of the downtown buildings were built such that the sidewalk in front of the building is shaded, or extends just under a building overhang. Walking by these buildings is actually bearable in the summer.

Why not hearken back to our city's roots and require that all new downtown construction provide some sort of shaded walkway?
