Wrecks are getting worse. Driving, more hazardous. Air pollution, worse. Twenty years ago freeway speed limit was 55 mph. And by state law, a driver had to go 66 to incur a moving traffic violation. But with the installation of speed cameras, freeway speed was raised to 65 mph. And drivers, assuming the 10-mph cushion still applies, sped up to 75 mph. Now cameras are gone. The 65-mph limit remains. And some drivers push on past 80. Speed differential creates a sense of danger, agressive behavior, and more horrific car crashes. And what's to keep this behavior from exiting onto city streets? Reduced to 55, gas milage increases, emissions decrease. And tires pick up and throw off less dust from the pavement. Please reduce the speed to 55. Simultaneously increase monitoring and apprehension. Also, please return the cameras. Have cameras send pix and data directly to a patrol car ready to apprehend. Flashing lights and car pulled over? Posted limits get more attention.
