Many people are puzzled by the red bands showing up around their neighborhood. some urban legends include alien takeovers, secret signals to invasions by foreigners, militia-types, conservative- or liberal-extremists.

If drivers waiting at a stop sign knew how to tell whether approaching cross-traffic had a stop sign, they would not stay stopped as traffic approached the stop sign, nor would they enter the intersection if they knew there were no stop sign.
