From the SanTan Fwy, drive to the west end of Pecos Road and you'll see them. Houses built up to the edge of the road easement. Nice homes. Pecos Road itself couldn't be extended without impacting the area. But building a freeway eats up vast amounts of land. Many houses will go if the state builds on the Pecos alignment. The state announced freeway plans in mid 1980's, almost 30 years ago. But the city zoned the land for development and issued building permits, even less than 20 years ago. Those "mixups" of the past, we will be paying for now. Unless the Gila River Community sees any advantage to having the freeway on its land. And unless they trust the state to keep its promises. But history is not kind. When negotiating for the I-10 to cross their land, exits and underpasses were promised, but not delivered. Why should they trust the state now? Isn't it time now for the state to deliver on its promises? Unconditionally? Build those exits! Hope for the best. |
