Create pilot walkability projects with schools as the epicenters. There are several schools and neighborhoods along the current Light Rail line; and several more along the proposed alignments. We should create Teams to evaluate the walkability and safety of these areas by using an objective assessment instrument. The Arizona Department of Transportation's Safe Routes To School Program has developed the Active School Neighborhood Checklist (ASNC) as such an instrument -- www.activeschoolchecklist.com. Using the calculated ASNC scores we can begin to see the relative deficiencies in infrastructure, programs, and policies, and start to prioritize improvements.
