As the city looks at expanding the use of our extensive canal system to encourage mixed use development for residential/commercial alike, why can't we use those waterways for effective transportation routes like they have done in Oklahoma City. This could reduce massive dollars spent for infrastructure and create "greener" transportation methods.

by Will Novak this would be very tricky to do in PHX b/c where all the roads cross the canals, they don't bump up and pass over the canal and leave room for any sort of boat to travel underneath.

I've always thought if Scottsdale was wise, they would've planned their Waterfront area for Water taxi's. They should've had the Soleri (and other) bridges up above the canal more so water taxi's could go under neath.

I think water taxi's would however be awesome if the Salt River/Town Lake is eventually continued to 19th Ave.

by Patrick B4 Agreed. However, I could see specific corridors benefitting from gondolas or something of the sort. The first that comes to mind is the area near 40th/Van Buren, where I can see future revitalization in the hotel/office/multifamily sectors and complementary services like dining/entertainment.

by Wesley H1 San Antonio has done this with their river...this was on the Phoenix Futures Forum list of recommendations years ago and yet nothing has happened. All we have are running and biking tracks. Many areas could be developed with all sorts of food, boutiques, etc.

by Ardyce E John, I like your concept. It seems to me though, that the gates in the canals would be an obstacle. Maybe tourist coffee bars running between gates?
