Downtown Phoenix has a problem. In summer months, especially it is just dang hot and dusty. The huge swaths of concrete and asphalt in the downtown corridor do nothing to help with this heat and large buildings trap it in as the evening progresses, creating a perpetually warmer atmosphere. This is known as the urban heat island effect. The city of Phoenix needs to hire some sustainable urban planners with backgrounds in urban landscaping. Downtown needs sustainable, regional landscaping (not more parking lots) throughout its city streets and sidewalks. We need to plant more trees to help mitigate this influx of heat. We want people to be able to walk downtown comfortably even in the summer time
