3rd street Promenade and LEED neighborhood
overall concept

When studying for CSBA, our group project was to turn 3rd st (from Roosevelt to Indian School - expanded length) into a bike and pedestrian friendly street. A long term idea that came up was to also develop a LEED Neighbor - or one based on that criteria. Besides sustainable mixed use buildings (in conjunction with already present corporations) we envisioned PV systems covering open areas (parking lots, tops of buildings, etc) and Xeroscape native landscaping with pedestrian rest stops for summertime rest - refreshing stops). The area can be future model neighborhood. Historic areas, single family areas are adjacent along with the Light Rail, an urban corporate commercial strip (Central Ave) and an underutilized-car dominated 3rd Street - that can be transformed into an appealing pedestrian neighborhood.

by Erin W9 As a homeowner in the 3rd St. & Thomas area I really support this! 3rd St. dead ends into Steele Indian School Park anyway, making it a natural choice for this type of project. It also needs a lot of love-- the above ground power lines are really offensive looking and even though there are great homes with a lot of character on either side of 3rd St., the overall ugliness of the abandoned commercial properties and lack of landscaping really detracts from the charm of the area.

by Will Novak for clarification: are you saying turn 3rd St into a Pedestrian mall?

Or rather just make it a more pedestrian friendly "complete street", with wider sidewalks, bike lanes, shade, pedestrian amenities, etc?

Id support the latter but not the former.

by Ardyce E This is the first promenade proposal I like because it covers an area, not just a streetscape. Amenities could support the neighborhoods and not be dependent on the pocketbooks of visitors.
