A bus loop route, using real transit buses not mini-buses, running on Thomas Rd., 24th St., Broadway Rd., and 19th Avenue. It would also be routed to serve County Hospital directly (as Route 24 used to do years ago), South Mountain Community College (school hours), and also follow route 19's loop through the Capitol Complex. Supplemental peak hour trips might be provided which do NOT serve SMCC thus providing faster service between the south and east portions of the loop. Service would be provided in both directions around the loop, with high frequency service (headways 10 minutes or less). This service can be provided by simply putting buses on the road, but over time the stops could be targeted for specific upgrades and branding. A trolleybus route is also possible. This route connects: Yes I like loops. Loops (and also "L" shaped routes) introduce new dynamics into a transit network that are beneficial to users. Transit operators hate them, because they do introduce certain operational challenges, but there are ways to deal with those. Valley Metro emphasizes regional service by providing a simple grid based system, and thats fine, and it should be improved by more frequent and faster service (limited stop service overlapping local). But there is also a need to "cut the grid" with supplemental services that increase overall network capacity, speed and convenience in selected areas to increase usefulness and attractiveness of the transit network. |
