To develop a great city you need to develop on the concept of themes. For example, the city should have parts that are italian, chinese, mexican, irish, bosnian, etc. and build on those themes. For example, if there is a greek church in the center of a neighborhood, have greek restaurants around it, the homes can have iconic greek columns, sculptures, there can be greek festivals in the neighborhood, etc.

There can be neighborhoods that tailor around other themes such as the Wild West cowboy theme, with western/cowboy architecture, barbecues outside, country music dancing in the street on special days.

Another theme could be architecture from different styles such as my favorite art deco. So a whole neighborhood built on this style. Maybe Frank Lloyd Wright inspired architecture..

There can be what most people consider as silly themes such as the clutter sign district (as in some areas of Phx). Where signs are all over the place and as if they are jumping off buildings.

These themed areas would be well connected by pedestrian ways, trolley, bike routes, greenbelts, canal paths, etc. There would be mountains preserved but also areas where a restaurant could be up on the mountain with shops.

Areas where you provide eco-tourism such as resorts built in caves, or underground or in the mountains. Eco-friendly communities.

You could have areas where there might be a music museum to build neighborhoods next to it with street names after musicians or songs. Subdivisions named after desert plants - then we will have a city that can educate us or we can learn from.

Instead of all the desert vegetation zoning requirements to allow for the planting of vegetables, fruit/ornamental plants in setbacks requirements. All these ideas may exist, but how do we get people to expand them and build on these themes. And help plan the rest of our lovely State of Arizona.

What themes would you like to see expanded on and how would you design that area of the City?
