Public spaces such as parks and gardens provide city residents with a much-needed respite from the hectic pace of city life. Development is not just about economic prosperity, important as that is, it is also about quality of life, and adding public green space will contribute to realizing this need. I say the city of Phoenix should design a peace garden, a botanical public space in the heart of downtown, where people can relax and enjoy both nature and the city. To honor our desert ecological heritage, we should showcase our desert plants, which would make it unique and attract out-of-state tourists who would like to sample our desert plant life, but might not be in town long enough to venture outside the city. This doesn't have to be all passive enjoyment either. We could have chess tables, an area for skateboards, a path for workers to walk or jog for exercise. Many cities have signature parks that attract tourists and establish urban identity. Where is ours?
