I worked in the convention center 3-4 years ago surveying visitors there for a conference. I worked several different events. Almost all of them had the same thing to say about the city. No entertainment. They would literally go to their meeting then hop in a cab or walk back to their hotel for the evening.

A more well known entertainment district would draw people from all over. Bring more of the ASU/Tempe/Scottsdale crowd into the downtown. The light-rail makes it possible. Bars and restaurants being open all day is also a must.

More options within walking distance will help. As a recent ASU alum, I can say that I have never received a call from a friend saying "we should go downtown tonight" and I'm a very social person.

The positive responses for the city were cleanliness, public transportation, impressive infrastructure, and weather.
