The physical barrier of South Mountain must be surmounted. It is time to extend the light rail over the Salt River through south Phoenix under South Mountain and then swing into the southern reaches of the East Valley. This would have tremendous benefits for the redevelopment of the southern reaches of Phoenix, provide a South Mountain station for users of South Mountain Park and remove loads of traffic from I-10 (Broadway curve) between the East Valley and downtown Phoenix. It is similar to passing the subway under the East River to join Manhattan and Brooklyn . . . it would change our city forever and stop development in the desert fringes of the city by concentrating new development along the Salt River. |
