Phoenix already has many mountain bike trails but proper planning and building of more mtb trails would make the city further ahead of other places around the country and in particular the West. The vast mountains and open space should be develped into single tracks that do not disturb the natural habitat but allow for some great long, technical and challenging mt bike rides. Smaller places like Durango, CO depend upon mountain bikers for their survival comming from all over the world to their trails...the economic impact is great.

Although some great advances have been made in bike lanes on the roads, Phoenix has some of the best weather for road biking. I would like to see more designated bike lanes to link neighborhoods and keep the vehicle traffic away from the bicycle traffic. A few years ago Chicago began placing flexible plastic barriers to divide the bike lanes from the vehicle traffic (see link). This keeps bikers protected and vehicles that do hit the poles will not damage their cars as the poles just pop back up.
